Lakeway

Population in Lakeway is approximately 9000 as of 2005 and growing. In the broader Lake Travis ISD territory, population is nearly 22,000, an increase of 87% in the past 10 years.

The Lake Travis ISD was created in 1981, and serves more than 5,000 students from Bee Cave to the Pedernales River to the west, the shores of Lake Travis on the north, and Lake Austin and Barton Creek to the east. The district currently has eigth campuses: Lake Travis High School, Lake Travis and Hudson Bend Middle Schools, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Lake Travis, Serene Hills and Lake Pointe Elementary Campuses.

Many Lakeway and South Lake Travis residents work in Austin, an easy 30-minute commute. However, as residential growth has mushroomed so has development of local businesses.   In addition to two new malls in the area, the Lakeway area will soon have two new hospitals opening including the Lake Travis Medical Center which will feature 100 beds and full service emergency services. Other large employers in the area include the Lakeway Resort and Spa, Lake Travis ISD, Home Depot, Target and the City of Lakeway.

Living in Lakeway means being on the golf course in the morning, and on your boat that afternoon. New restaurants, shops, consumer/business services and health care facilities are eliminating the need to drive into Austin. Housing choices range from one-of-a-kind luxury waterfront homes, town homes or custom homes on one of the many area golf courses.

Lakeway is located about 25 miles west of Austin, along the south shore of Lake Travis. What once was a 2,700-acre ranch has evolved into a bustling resort community completed with golf courses, resort hotel, marina, airport and full range of services provided through its own municipality, the city of Lakeway. In earlier years, Lakeway was primarily a retirement and second-home community. Today, families are drawn to the lake lifestyle and renown schools, while active empty-nesters and young professionals are beckoned by the surrounding beauty, proximity to Austin employers and virtually unlimited golf and water sports.

Lakeway was the first major development on the lake's south side. In recent years, however, the entire lake area has boomed with new residential development. A few of the Lakeway-area communities include Bee Cave, The Hills, Lake Pointe, Flintrock Falls and Spanish Oaks.
